What is Granite?
Granite is an igneous rock formed from the slow crystallisation of magma beneath the Earth's surface. This process — which takes millions of years — produces an interlocking crystal structure of quartz, feldspar, and mica that gives granite its legendary hardness and durability.
No two granite slabs are ever identical. The unique mineral composition of each deposit produces a distinct pattern of crystals, veins, and colour variations that make every installation a one-of-a-kind work of natural art.
At Melbourne Natural Stone, we source granite from the world's finest quarries — from the dramatic black granites of India to the exotic blues of Norway and the warm golds of Brazil. Every slab in our Mulgrave showroom is hand-selected for quality, consistency, and visual impact.
Applications
Kitchen Benchtops
Granite's hardness and heat resistance make it the ideal kitchen surface. It won't scratch under knives, won't scorch under hot pots, and with proper sealing, resists staining from oils and acids. A granite benchtop is a lifetime investment.
Outdoor Paving
Few natural stones perform as well outdoors as granite. Its dense structure resists frost, UV fading, and heavy foot traffic. Flamed or brushed finishes provide excellent slip resistance for pool surrounds, driveways, and entertaining areas.
Bathroom Vanities
Granite's low porosity makes it naturally resistant to moisture and mould when properly sealed. Its weight and solidity give bathroom vanities a premium feel that no engineered material can replicate.
Feature Walls & Cladding
Large-format granite panels create dramatic architectural statements. Whether bookmatched for a symmetrical effect or randomly laid for a natural look, granite cladding adds permanence and prestige to any facade.

Caring for Granite
Seal on installation
Apply a penetrating stone sealer immediately after installation and annually thereafter. This prevents oils and liquids from penetrating the surface.
Clean with pH-neutral products
Use a mild, pH-neutral stone cleaner or warm soapy water. Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon) and abrasive products that can dull the polish.
Wipe spills promptly
Although granite is low-porosity, prolonged exposure to red wine, coffee, or cooking oils can stain unsealed stone. Wipe spills as soon as they occur.
Use trivets and cutting boards
Granite is heat-resistant but not heat-proof. Use trivets for very hot cookware and cutting boards to preserve the polished finish.
